Video Poker
The rules of video poker are quite simple. You are dealt five
cards. From these five cards you must decide which ones, if any,
you would like to keep in order to try and make a winning hand.
You then hold* the cards you want to keep, the remainder are discarded
and replaced with new cards. If you are in possession of a winning
hand you are paid according to the value of that hand.
* To hold a card, click on its corresponding "Hold"
button or on the card itself, depending on the machine you are
playing at the time.
The winning hands are as follows, from most valuable to least
valuable.
| Royal Flush |
10, J, Q, K, A of the same suit |
| Straight Flush |
any other 5 consecutive cards of the same suit. |
| 4-of-a-Kind |
4 cards of the same value. |
| Full House |
A 3-of-a-Kind and a Pair. |
| Flush |
Any 5 non-consecutive cards of the same suit |
| Straight |
5 consecutive cards of different suits |
| 3-of-a-Kind |
3 cards of the same value |
| 2 Pairs |
A Pair + A Pair |
| Pair |
2 cards of the same value |
Strategy: There are many types of video poker but the
best payouts are usually offered by the "Jacks or Better"
variety. By using the following strategy it is possible to achieve
a very high payout. Simply look at your cards and hold the hand
(or potential hand) with the highest priority. If you have a combination
of potential wins then pick the option which is highest on the
list. For example; if you are dealt 3 4 5 6 4 of differing suits
you have "4 cards of an outside straight" and
a "low pair". Looking at the chart you will see that
the low pair has a higher priority and should be the strategy
that you employ. Lucky Nugget Casino offers a fantastic video
poker game which automatically holds the best cards for you and
is a great aid in learning the best strategy. The software also
has a stats page which tracks how well you are playing. You can
download the software and play for free here.

BetXtra.com Tip:
The payouts for "Jacks or Better" video
poker can be so high that many casinos do not count
wagers on this game towards the minimum wagering requirements
for any promotional chips. It's always best to check
the Terms & Conditions for each individual casino
in that respect.
